The 1820s saw Marines continuing their shipboard duties as they served as the nation's force-in-readiness across the globe while also participating in many battles of America's Indian Wars. The Marine Corps survived President Andrew Jackson's attempts to combine the Marine Corps with the Army—thus ensuring that the Corps remained an independent service in support of the Department of the Navy. The Marines then fought in the Seminole Wars and participated in battles such as Hatchee-Lustee and Wahoo Swamp.
