The History of The Book Store
A Century of Service to Marines
Since its founding in 1913, the Marine Corps Association (MCA) has played a unique role within the Marine Corps community. Established by Marines for Marines, MCA was created to foster professional development, preserve institutional knowledge, and strengthen the bonds that define the Corps. Through publications, events, education, and advocacy, MCA has supported Marines across generations—on active duty, in reserve status, and in civilian life.
Central to that mission has always been the idea that informed, educated Marines make the Corps stronger. That belief gave rise not only to MCA’s professional publications, but also to its earliest retail efforts. The Original MCA Bookstore
Decades ago, MCA operated the MCA Bookstore, a physical and mail-order resource dedicated primarily to professional reading and military scholarship. It offered titles from the Commandant’s Professional Reading List, books on leadership, strategy, and Marine Corps history, along with carefully selected gifts and heritage items. For officers, SNCOs, and Marines serious about their profession, the bookstore was both a resource and a rite of passage.
At its core, The MCA Bookstore was about access to knowledge, pride in service, and reinforcing what it means to be a Marine.

As the needs and expectations of Marines and their families evolved, so did MCA’s retail presence. The bookstore expanded its product offerings, eventually becoming The MARINE Shop—a more comprehensive operation that included both uniform items and non‑uniform merchandise. For many years, The Marine Shop became a familiar and trusted name, serving Marines at key moments in their careers and lives.
Throughout that evolution, the purpose remained the same: proceeds supported MCA’s nonprofit mission and, by extension, Marines themselves.
A Strategic Transition—and a Return to Our Roots
Today, MCA is embarking on a thoughtful transition. The MARINE Shop name and uniform business are being transferred to Marine Corps Community Services, ensuring that uniform sales remain closely aligned with the Marine Corps support for Marines and their families.
At the same time, MCA is reintroducing The Book Store—a modern, e‑commerce–focused retail venture that reconnects directly with MCA’s original retail identity and purpose.
What The Book Store Is Today
The Book Store is an online destination built on history, trust, and relevance. It focuses on:
- Professional reading and Marine Corps–related books
- Heritage and commemorative items
- Gifts that reflect Marine Corps values and pride
- Officially licensed Marine Corps–branded products
While the platform is new, the relationship is not. Customers who have long supported MCA through The MARINE Shop will find the same commitment to quality, service, and mission—now presented in a streamlined, modern digital experience.
Why Your Support Still Matters
Every purchase from The Book Store directly supports the Marine Corps Association’s work: professional education, thought leadership, recognition of excellence, and lifelong connection to the Corps. Shopping with The Book Store is more than a transaction—it is an investment in Marines and in the future of the Marine Corps.
The Book Store honors where we’ve been, reflects who we are, and looks forward to serving the Marine Corps community for generations to come.
