"The first battle casualties of the Continental Navy and Marines occurred when a 20-gun ship of the Royal Navy, the Glasgow and her tender, intercepted the Alfred and Cabot off of Block Island, on the return voyage from the New Providence raid. In the exchange of fire, the Alfred was badly damaged, and Marine 2nd Lt. John Fitzpatrick and others became the first names on Marine Corps and Naval casualty lists. The only British reported casualties were inflicted by musket shots fired by Marine marksmen."
