"Several reports say that the original orders were to set sail and attack a British fortress on Nova Scotia. The contention was that there had been some misinterpretation, or direct disregard of orders. After being icebound on the Delaware River during a long, hard winter of desertions and discontent, however, it seemed logical that this first Naval-Marine task force should have sailed for a warmer, more pleasant target. Whatever the reasons, in due time the small flotilla hove to off the sandy beaches of Nassau, on the island of new Providence in the Bahamas, and proceeded to conduct the first amphibious landing in the history of our Corps."
